The Prince & His Madness

For the past three years Einstein Music Journal has put together an End Of Year Top 20 list based entirely on the votes of New Zealand musicians. We are happy to see two Sonorous Circle releases make the list for 2010 – Glass Vaults, ‘Glass EP’ at #7 and Seth Frightening, ‘The Prince and His Madness’ at #1 album of the year! Big thanks to EMJ and all the lovely folks who voted!

WELCOME MINNELLI!

Today we officially welcome the dude-ranger extraordinaire Caleb McKenzie, a.k.a Minnelli, to the Sonorous Circle. I’ve been listening to his musical creations through the wall for a few years now but at last we have his excellent second release, the aptly titled ‘2’, to feast our ears upon in slightly higher definition.

Minnelli 2

SCR008 – Minnelli, ‘2’
‘2’ moves cinematically from a restrained but powerful synth-laden epic through hints of dark 80’s, glacial pop and intergalactic dreams of psychedelic bliss while fractured rhythms send a downbeat danceability over swirling, shimmering ambience that flows compellingly towards territory DJ Shadow might have roamed had he been enthused by ancient transcendentalism.

This is a highly varied but coherent and well contoured half hour – an intricately layered and innovative sample-based construction well worth a listen and freely downloadable below for your own convenience.

SC ARTICLE IN SALIENT

Article thanks to James Beavis of VUW’s Salient Magazine.

From smaller beginnings in 2006, Thomas Lambert and close friend Matt Faisandier began the label as a logical step from their furious creative output.“[We] were in three or four bands or projects each at the time (In the Interest of the Convoy, Akaname, Ornithologist, 100 Suns, A Flight to Blackout, The Enright House and i.ryoko), and it was obvious that we would be making music for the rest of our lives, so it just made sense to start a label,” Lambert says. The label has been an evolving process, one which now consists of core members Lambert, Faisander and Sean Kelly (of Seth Frightening)—“close friends who I know will be obsessed with music and general good times until we die.”

WELCOME PAPERGHOST!

Today we welcome the prodigiously talented Zach Webber, a.k.a Paperghost, to the Sonorous Circle. He brings with him his debut album, The Teledermatologist Handbook: possibly one of the most unique, detailed and imaginative (yet still somehow understated) albums I have ever heard. Get your listen on if you’re at all into bands like The Books, Kid A-styles Radiohead or I-don’t-know-what-the-hell-this-really-sounds-like.

SCR007 – Paperghost, ‘The Teledermatologist Handbook’
Veils of dust gather on layers of jostling sonic dimensions teetering on the edge of intelligibility like crumbling electroacoustic concrete, but dressed up as the most imaginative, fragile, ornate and paranormal pop music to be made in the 1940s. Macro, meso and micro-sound magic! 15 tracks, 41 minutes.

Take a listen >here.
