Seth Frightening – B.Hoo /
A recent excavation revealed these three fine outpourings of spirit; Uniquely coloured and powerful forms laid down on laptops in bedrooms and hospital hallways with contagious sincerity and words tinged with protest and the fear of reality that comes alongside modern injustice and social awareness. A rare and wonderful listen!

Seth Frightening – B.Hoo / High School
Forward to the past! Here goes a wee selection of songs written and recorded in Seth Frightening’s high school days; Sincere tracks laid down in the lofi bedroom style by a wise young man, excavated from broken hard drives and still bearing the character of minidisc glitches and planes taking off in the background.

Glass Vaults – Into Clear EP
Released November 2011.
Glass Vault’s Into Clear is a pale blue sky. Half awake / Half asleep. Humming incantations. Richard Larsen and Rowan Pierce – now with the help of Signer & Skallander legend, Bevan Smith – using their usual mishmash of electronics, voice & guitars, have cast forth a new EP; This one more consistently ambient than the last, gently rubbing at your ears like a good friend (for a solid 28 minutes). Each song is a wide open space but extremely delicate; for the most part moving at a slow, almost changeless hover and then shifting subtly as if guided by a gentle hand.
Richard’s singing voice, at times breath-taking, earnestly sets the scene for each track, floating through dream-state electronics singing songs of light and fading memories. Glass Vaults give the listener three choices; engage, submit or ignore. These are hymns for no One but Everyone.
Stoner Gospel anyone?

Award winning performance artist Cat Ruka presents her latest work NEW TREATY MILITIA, a theatrical protest that radically explores the contentious document of the Treaty of Waitangi. It investigates how this document relates to the way in which identity is constructed – and perhaps obsessed over – in New Zealand, and poses the idea that it preoccupies Maori and Pakeha with an abstract game of power transferral.
NEW TREATY MILITIA is a surreal and decadent performance critique that strives to demonstrate the realities of how this document manifests in all its horrifyingly dark and profoundly creative ways.
NEW TREATY MILITIA is a duet between Cat and New Zealand born dancer and performance artist Josh Rutter..

There’s some encouraging signs around!
Occupy Wellington have set up in Civic Square in support of the worldwide movement which aims to engage with the public and promote discussion and action around issues of political, social and economic justice. Keep your eyes peeled for posters advertising informative lectures and discussions to be held there, and if you’re a facebooker I’m sure you’ll find some goss on there too.

Thanks heeeeeaps to Chris at thebigcity.co.nz for these lovely photos! I used to live in Christchurch so it was rad to be back and see how things are going post-catastophic earthquake. The central city remains a no-go area so there are seemingly no landmarks with which to navigate but the people of the ‘burbs are stepping up to provide some very hopeful signs! An encouraging place to be.
THE BREWERY

DARKROOM – So coooool! As Chris put it “The Archive (Darkroom’s parent building which also houses Galaxy Records and the new RDU permanent studio) is quickly becoming one of my favorite places, with great shows, warm hosts, fantastic drinks, home-made snacks and brilliant events.” Enough said.
