“In March, 2018, Daisy Wells was invited to Auckland’s Academy Cinemas to preform a live score for Louis Webber’s 1915 silent drama, The Hypocrites. Over the course of the film, Wells weaves together field recordings, recurring samples of monastic intonation, synthesized drones and delicate harp-drawn twinkles, creating a dense sonic cloud in response to Webber’s anticlerical satire.

Of her approach to this project, Wells observes:
“I treated Hypocrites with intimacy, reading and developing my relationship with the film and to Lois Webber (the film maker). The film is silent but it is loud. I spent a while drawing out the film makers voice, a guiding consciousness perpetually flows throughout the film. Webber is highly conscious of herself and her audience, she spits fire.

…

I approached this project encompassing my usual ritual. Process and improvisation are the heart of my practice, as well as the extraction, translation and stimulation of emotion. I focused on developing ways to simultaneously represent Webber’s presence while forming my own.”

All material performed live by Daisy Wells at Academy Cinemas, Auckland, using sythesizers, cassettes, various microphones and effects, as well as percussion and sundry objects.

The project was developed by Lila Bullen-Smith and Ardit Hoxha in association with the artist and The Audio Foundation, Auckland. ”
