THE BASEMENT TAPES TO SHOW AT MELBOURNE FRINGE

The Basement Tapes, a hit of the NZ Fringe Festival, is coming to Melbourne this week! Part multi-channel audio work, part live performance, this immersive show is “eerie, thrilling & totally engrossing.” (Theatreview)

Following her Grandmother’s death, a girl (Stella Reid) is faced with the overwhelming task of clearing out her house for sale. She finds some old cassettes and on hearing them for the first time both audience and solo performer fight not to drown among the waves of secrets and memories in the basement.

With sound-design by Thomas Lambert (I.Ryoko) this psychological horror is “truly driven by sound… shifting points of origin have me looking all around, distortions jerk me back and forth through time, and the volume draws me to the edge of my seat only to blast me back. Meanwhile, Reid manipulates and is manipulated by the sound; she dances with joy one moment and slams stop on the tape in the next, full of fear. We’re drawn in further by her mysterious reactions, not just watching a relationship but listening to one.” (The Pantograph Punch)
