SONNY CRICKLE’S 2017 MELBOURNE BLOG #2

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

Gonna be posting mostly photos here, beginning with the obligatory plane shots departing NZ:

Marlborough Sounds, NZ

From here it’s all Melbourne. Every night before the show we’d have to hang in the alleyway outside the venue waiting for the other show to finish. One night I struck up a conversation outside with the venue manager who thought I was a homeless guy and asked if I was sleeping rough! Fair call.

This is Stella ‘the grand-daughter’ and Joe ‘the pizza guy’ listening to Arj Barker‘s set from the cheap seats outside the Lithuanian Club:

Two weeks in Australia has flown by in what feels like no time at all and the Melbourne Fringe season of The Basement Tapes is now complete!

We had a great response from audiences here, receiving a nomination for best performance at the festival, moving numerous people to tears and scaring many more!

As one reviewer put it, “the story really burrows its way into your mind and then begins to play tricks on you in a truly terrifying theatrical experience.“ Another called it “an intriguing – at times, frightening – piece of theatre that’s expertly delivered.”

A huge thankyou to everyone who has supported this project – and to Stella Reid, Jason Longstaff, Jane Yonge and Joe Wright for being the coolest colleagues and travel buddies!

I’m lucky to be hanging back for another couple weeks to play some shows (as I.Ryoko) and immerse myself in the incredible space that is Magnet.

More to follow!

THE BASEMENT TAPES TO SHOW AT MELBOURNE FRINGE

Saturday, September 23rd, 2017

The Basement Tapes, a hit of the NZ Fringe Festival, is coming to Melbourne this week! Part multi-channel audio work, part live performance, this immersive show is “eerie, thrilling & totally engrossing.” (Theatreview)

Following her Grandmother’s death, a girl (Stella Reid) is faced with the overwhelming task of clearing out her house for sale. She finds some old cassettes and on hearing them for the first time both audience and solo performer fight not to drown among the waves of secrets and memories in the basement.

With sound-design by Thomas Lambert (I.Ryoko) this psychological horror is “truly driven by sound… shifting points of origin have me looking all around, distortions jerk me back and forth through time, and the volume draws me to the edge of my seat only to blast me back. Meanwhile, Reid manipulates and is manipulated by the sound; she dances with joy one moment and slams stop on the tape in the next, full of fear. We’re drawn in further by her mysterious reactions, not just watching a relationship but listening to one.” (The Pantograph Punch)

Venue: Fringe Hub: Arts House – Warehouse
Time: Tue – Sat 9:00 PM, Sun 8:00 PM
Duration: 55 minutes
Price: $25.00

It’s an amazing space and a friend has kindly gifted us the use of the building for a one-off gig/art happening .. we’re going to fill the place with installations, performances, projections and sound! It’s also the Orchestra of Spheres leaving party before the band set sail to the US and Iceland next week, and they’re joined by a whole heap of good friends for the night.” Be sure to RSVP if you want to attend!

THEATRE: ‘THE HADES COMPLEX’

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

A play directed by Daniel Emms, with original music by i.ryoko

Friday 7 – Tuesday 11 February, 7.30pm (4pm matinee only on Sunday the 9th)
@ Te Whaea Theatre

“When something leaves our lives, how do we cope? Do we wallow in our bedrooms with ice cream and movies, party like nothing has changed, or just start running?

How do we find peace?

Contained within the monolithic architecture of Te Whaea Theatre, The Hades Complex seeks to capture the volatile forces at work within the process of losing something close to us.

Inspired by classical and ancient mythology, the piece uses visionary, sensory and visceral experiences to explore human behaviour around grief and loss. The piece invites you into a series of worlds ranging from the grotesque to the uniquely beautiful.

Populated by epic characters, surreal costumes, a transformative lighting design and joined by the musical force that is i.ryoko; The Hades Complex promises to be an un-missable theatrical event.”

(Contains strobe lighting, partial nudity & some coarse language)
