THE MAKE IT UP CLUB

This week I went to the long-running improvised sound night, the Make It Up Club, at Bar Open. It’s been running every Tuesday for almost 20 years!!! Saw a couple bands with great names – INTRINSIC LIGHT, and SACRED ORDER OF MAGNITUDE – the latter pictured here:

SHOW TONIGHT! I.RYOKO, THE CONVOY & DOWSER

There’ll be tourist photos galore in the next week or so but today I’ve been preparing for the fast-approaching show, at The Toff in Town TONIGHT! (Thursday) > Tickets here!!! < Please tell all your sound-loving Melbourne pals : )

THE CONVOY

THE CONVOY got a review of their album, ‘Heh’, on Echoes and Dust this week that said of their music: “It’s such a gorgeous embrace of all living things happening around us. With soundscapes that drone into infinity and elements that engage you. I can’t stress this enough, this is the music everyone needs in their lives.” (-Anthony Cooley)

It’s good advice. I certainly felt better after being treated to some deeeeeep sonics from these two! Here’s Matt & Erin troubleshooting a squeely tape machine a couple nights ago:

The Convoy & I.Ryoko

(dys/)utopian noise collective THE CONVOY will be joined in Melbourne by New Zealand label mate and drone wizard I.RYOKO for a rare performance in October.

Paving new paths into the landscape of experimental sound, the artists are united by their approach toward creating enveloping sonic structures which accumulate, regenerate and compound; shared and felt through visceral bodily experiences.

While their respective methods of sound production make for markedly different sound worlds – one activated by kinetic movement, the other grounded in electronic production – both approaches are energized by deep listening, an affinity for dense subsonic resonance and a will to communicate the ineffable.

MORE INFO

I.Ryoko

I.RYOKO ( NZ ) explores cathartic, ecstatic & transcendental sound. Intuitive compositions of synth, samplers and voice seek to envelop the listener with immense, evolving drones and kaleidoscopic layers of rhythm and melody. The result is often lush and meditative, at times intense or cataclysmic.

The project is that of Thomas Lambert, a New Zealand-based artist with a background in composition, audio engineering, film and theatre sound.

RIYL: Oneohtrix Point Never, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Steve Reich, Stars of the Lid.

The Convoy

THE CONVOY ( MEL ) conducts vast luminous orchestral atmospheres by way of real-time processing of electric guitar and electro-acoustic percussives via ¼” tape.

Atmospheres immerse and envelop via abstracted, organic and mesmeric audio visual emissions. Here exists a static surface tension, perpetually and intimately comforting, only to be inevitably obliterated by sheer and momentous walls of noise.

NEW RELEASE: THE CONVOY – HEH

Monday, July 24th, 2017

From Void, unbounded empty (w)hole
Divide, unravel and lift untold
Arcane structure, present form
Diversify in Unity

Sound, resound and resonate
In strength our voices fill our plates
Hyper-colour stories here translate
Transfigured destiny

Opening into altered other
Spectral offerings from Mother, Father
Level the world in travelling far beyond
Fissures in Harmony.”

So begins this epic album by THE CONVOY. 58 minutes of intense, dynamic and complex sound!

Conjured with electric guitar (Matt Faisandier), percussion & tape (Erin K Taylor), ‘not sax’ (Lloyd Honeybrook) & vocals (Carly Fern), Heh was recorded and refined in the resonant spaces of Magnet Studios in Melbourne. Immersion recommended!

For similarly entrancing visual stimulation, check their latest video by Scott McLachtlie (+ more here):

MAGNET MELBOURNE – SHOW REVIEW 01.04.17

Wednesday, April 26th, 2017

RYOSUKE KIYASU / CHANNELS / NOISECORKESTRA / ARI SHARP / OCTAVE PUSSY

Review by Will Tremain.

“It was the day of fools that Magnet hosted Japanese artist Ryosuke Kiyasu for a show as part of his DIY tour across Australia’s East Coast.

Kicking off the night, Channels went to work loosening the screws in our minds with avant garde performance art, keeping us all right on the brink of understanding what was actually happening. Ambient sci-fi-esque tones laid a backdrop to the show’s antics, consisting of operatic singing, spontaneous crying, and instructions for the most delicious pie ever. “What even was that?!” was a comment thrown out by an audience member – who also happened to be Channels.

MAGNET! BARGAIN STUDIOS FOR MELBOURNE MUSOS

Thursday, July 16th, 2015

SC co-founder and legendary dude, Matt Faisandier (The Convoy/Akaname/Ornithologist), has officially launched an incredible studio/rehearsal space on the site of an old mushroom farm in North Coburg, Melbourne! It goes by the name, Magnet.

Taking inspiration from the not-for-profit Lentil as Anything restaurants, this month they are trialing a ‘pay-as-you-feel’ model from 11am-5pm Fridays. Seriously, that means you can pay whatever you like to mess around in a nice room with a P.A!! So if you’re in need of a space in Melbourne, don’t wait > BOOK ONLINE HERE!
