I bought a few ruby tubes 12ax7's ("preamp" tubes) for a number I built and they suck. Two have already failed.

Low gain breaks up to quickly and sounds brittle...

What's the typical cost asscociated with a build man?

I'm charging two grand for one of these bad boys with a cabinet for the chassis to sit in and be safe from the dangers of the high velocity kinetic world we operate in. That's about $1400 in materials and $600 in labour.
