VIDEO: WOMB – LIONESS

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

Check out the sensual and sisterly new video for Womb‘s track Lioness – co-created by Georgette Brown and Dan Harris (aka Illojgali)!

“A lot of symbols come up again and again for us: like bleeding shells, insects and other flora and fauna, fire, and sisterhood. We didn’t exactly know where it was going, but we knew it would start with a bloody womb and end in flames and we just let it unfold organically from there, like sowing a dream seed. Kind of inspired too by David Lynch once saying how he’ll just see a random image in his mind and then follow that without questioning it.” – Charlotte Forrester/ Womb

LAND OF THE LONG WHITE STAIN

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

The Lumiere Reader have released an online music-documentary featuring Seth Frightening, Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing, Shab Orchestra and I.E.Crazy as they tour the country. A “contemplative ode to a brood of genre-bending Auckland musicians”. Stream here & get further insights below:

“While the songs themselves are the heroes of the story, behind-the-scenes footage permits a glimpse into the processes and world-views of a group of fiercely creative individuals whose work falls outside the ever-constrictive paradigms of popular music in New Zealand.” – Claire Duncan, writer & director.

Zac Arnold of RNZ’s Music 101 spoke with Claire to discuss the difficulties of capturing the essence of live performance and what it means to be a musician on the margins:

MISCELLANY 30.09.14

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

Here’s some lighter fare in lieu of some deeper discourse and new music news coming soon!

CIRCLE OF ABSTRACT RITUAL:
“This film took 300,000 photos, riots, wildfires, paintings in abandoned houses, two years and zero graphics to make. It changed my entire life.” – Jeff Frost

Master drummer, Nathu Solinky, plays Nagara, a type of paired kettle drums from Pushkar, India. Apparently “an indispensable component of any North Indian wedding”!

TYLER THE CREATOR ON LARRY KING LIVE:

Tyler the Creator is the rabble-rousing rapper and creative entrepreneur who was controversially denied entrance to New Zealand last year, preventing him from opening for Eminem with his group, Odd Future. “Under Immigration legislation, people who are believed to be a threat to public order can be refused entry to the country – though (the Immigration NZ Border Operation Manager) says this is the first time she can recall it being applied to a musical act… Generally it’s aimed at organisations like white supremacists and neo-Nazis, people who have come in here to be public speakers, holocaust deniers – those kinds of people.”

While he may appear at times to be mysogynist asshole, here he is being civil to the veteran talk-show host, Larry King. A curious intergenerational conversation!

DOCUMENTARY: THE INTERNET’S OWN BOY

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

The inspiring story of the benevolent young computer genius who sought to allow free knowledge for the human race only to be crushed by the US Criminal Justice System. RIP Aaron Swartz.

POLICE MILITARISATION IN AMERICA:

Police in Camo (screenshot from video below)

The following video is recommended viewing – John Oliver manages a comedic look at police militarisation in America and provides an informative summary of the current situation in Ferguson:

And ELECTION VANDALISM IN NEW ZEALAND:
To round this out, here’s a picture of NZ’s ‘honorable‘ Prime Minister, John Key:

The NZ election is held on September 20th and already there’s a whole blog dedicated to photos of defaced party billboards! Apparently election-hoarding vandalism is at an “unprecendented” level this year.

Hopefully I’ll get a more constructive look at the contenders in NZ politics soon. In the mean time, make sure you are enrolled to vote!

THIS LAND IS MINE

Once again the Israel/ Palestine conflict has boiled into mass murder with over 172 Palestinians, mostly civilians, killed in the last 7 days from heavy bombing on residential areas and rocket launch sites. There have been no Israeli casualties, owing both to the lacking power of the Palestinian rockets, and the near impenetrability of the Israeli missile defense system, the so-called ‘Iron Dome’.

As the never-ending conflict continues we are reminded that violence solves nothing. The following cartoon musical shows a creative (and loose) history of the back and forth killing that has relentlessly tormented successive peoples of this area since ancient times:
